The song Amazing Grace (
AeroSmith
version -
Collins
version, both on YouTube) has been my favorite song since the start of this year. The reason is that I can infer directly from the song to my life.
"I once was lost, but now am found" refers not to being physically lost,
but to lose faith in God. When I lost faith in God, I didn't realize at the time the impact it would have on my life. I became angrier at other people including friends, family, and even my self.
It's like the commandment, "treat your neighbor as yourself".
You can't treat your neighbors nicely if you aren't being kind to yourself1 It's like Satan trying to treat God nicely; he can't do it because he hates himself too much to care for anyone else. The Japanese have learned that they should treat their elders with a huge amount of respect, and by respecting others, they have to respect themselves!
Because we are only human, it is IMPOSSIBLE not to sin.
But that doesn't mean it is ok to sin, it just means that we should be careful about our own actions.
The part in Amazing Grace, "was blind, but now I see" is referring to sins covering our eyes. God provides the way for our eyes to be opened, and it is up to us to respond. We humans have to ask for forgiveness to take away the sin that is covering our eyes. We know that God will provide us the tools and power to live as Christians in this world.
From this experience of losing my faith, I can honestly say that, Now I have been found.
